Hi there,

Dan and David here with one of our charming, if a little sporadic updates. And this one is a doozy!

We have been working like a pair of mighty plough horses, our hearts filled with punky, post-calamity, community seeking, high sea venturing, joy! And all that effort has resulted in a pair of books we are brimming with pride about and super excited to share with you.

Before we go any further can we just pause for a moment and bask in the wonder that is you, our community of most excellent backers. Thank you so much for providing us and our collaborators, with the time and space to make these paper bound worlds. We hope you enjoy them as much as we've enjoyed making them.

Right now we have the main book, Islands of Weirdhope, safely stored in the Copy/Paste lockup. And as I write, the adventure book, Five Fathoms Deep, is winging its way across the geological expanse of mainland Europe, from its place of printing to us in the South East of England.

Here's a few pictures of the books, look at it's lovely chubby cheeks, so cute, such a thing of beauty.

And here's a picture of the pallet of books being delivered. That's a s#*t-ton of books right there. A s#*t-ton.

And finally, here's the finished front cover for Five Fathoms Deep. :)

In the coming days we will be sending out the backers survey for your delivery details etc, so please keep your eyes peeled for that.

That's about all for now, but We'll be back again soon with fun news about what's next this year. Including details about our on going tour of the UK. If you're around England between now and Xmas and find yourself at Thought Bubble comics festival, or at Dragonmeet, come and find us, we will be there.

Hey backers!

David & Dan here, with a personal message from Zedeck below, outlining a few changes we have had to make.

Islands of Weirdhope is going to be with us soon. We have been working on it non-stop this year to make it bigger and better than anything we have done before, alongside trying to survive in this increasingly mad, rapidly heating world… we hope it will be worth the wait for you. Not long now!

Here's a quick summary of what's changed:
  • Zedeck's new adventure for Four Fathoms Deep has been forgone so that he could focus on editing the core book, which now has twice as much content than anticipated (his previous adventure, To Put Away A Sword, will be bundled free with every copy as a token of recompense)
  • The Pirate-overrun Dino Land stretch goal has been replaced with the Blackrock stretch goal (an imprisoned Monster needs help to escape)
  • The Mecha & Monster illustration stretch goal has been redirected into the fully illustrated bestiary stretch goal, as the 36 creatures will be more useful in play
  • The GM Screen has changed from a single screen to a bundle of three card-folding-screens

We go into the reasons for each below. We're sorry for these changes, but we hope you'll understand and be as excited as we are for what's coming!

Why we’ve made these decisions

It's been a joy working on the core book. Together, each of us, Dan, David and Zedeck, have brought out and refined so many elements, making it something we're now really proud of. As of today, it's gone to print, and work on finessing the layout for Four Fathoms Deep is in progress.

The production of a creative work is never straightforward. Certain things that made sense during the campaign felt less important as we built the book. The Pirate-overrun Dino Land stretch goal felt less connected to the rest of the world than the trapped monster of Blackrock. Including it means the main book now contains a mini-campaign with Zedeck's fingerprints all over it. We also had a stretch goal for illustrations of multiple Mecha and Monsters, but a fully illustrated bestiary felt more vital to the book's usability at the table, so that's the direction we went. We hope you can see these choices have made the book more useful, and a better work for you overall.

The current word count of the five adventures in Four Fathoms Deep is a mighty 21,664, and each establishes a different aspect of the Weirdhope world:

  • Leo Hunt has written The Wreck of the Katabasis, a whalefall-crawl through the carcass of a recently deceased leviathan, delving into the mythological Abyss hinted at in the main book.
  • Chris Air has written Children of Thalassa, a corporate aerostat facility housed in a dormant Titan's body, stressing the weird in Weirdhope.
  • Alexander Jatscha-Zelt has written Neptun's Heartstone, an adventure landscape in the floating ruins of a fallen sky fortress, where three factions struggle over what to do with the fading levitation crystal within the machinery.
  • Will Purves (Dodocahedron Games) has written Quick Winds & A Quiet Palette, where rival artists race island to island, risking dangerous crossings to create visionary works in the wilds of the Weirdhope Sea, as an ancient Monster and AI Mecha threaten to combine.
  • Amanda Lee Franck has written Mobile Resource Extraction Plant, where a rickety mobile resource extraction plant has inadvertently gathered a collection of people, animals, and junk in its interior.

Even without Zedeck's adventure, we hope you'll agree this is quite a compendium. To make up for it, we'll bundle a copy of Zedeck's previous adventure, To Put Away A Sword, with every copy of Four Fathoms Deep, and share the PDF with all backers.

Finally, the plan for our GM screen has changed. Despite exhaustive research, we haven't been able to find a reasonable supplier after our original one fell through, so each backer who ordered a GM Screen will instead receive a set of three card-folding-screens, each with different full-colour art on one side, and a plethora of useful tables and diagrams on the reverse. They're a little thinner than a traditional GM screen, but still beautiful, free-standing, hide your notes from players, and set the scene for play. We hope you'll accept and understand this compromise.

A personal message from Zedeck

I was originally brought onto the Islands of Weirdhope project to write a 4000-word adventure for “Four Fathoms Deep”, its companion adventure anthology. I was also hired to edit the main Islands of Weirdhope manuscript, in both developmental and copyediting capacities.

At the beginning of the project / the crowdfunding campaign, Islands of Weirdhope was envisioned as a 20,000-word text, thereabouts. But, as these things go, the book expanded in its writing.

With all the rules, systems, a titanic amount of random tables, an atlas of evocative images, and a full starter adventure campaign spanning multiple islands and two full dungeons, the final Islands of Weirdhope manuscript clocks in at 40,000++ words (!!!).

This is a special book and David and Daniel have made something full of Essence, deserving of Gaia’s grace.

However, the added bounty isn’t without cost. David and I had to have some serious conversations. Given that:
  • The core book—at its new, expanded size—was completed before I could begin work on my adventure;
  • Nothing in it is superfluous enough to excise, and making sure everything is good and polished is a priority;
  • Editing the book proved to be an exhaustive task, and while I am very detail-fixated this also means I work slow as hell

We’ve come to the decision to forgo my adventure for Four Fathoms Deep. For what it’s worth, I do genuinely believe the Islands of Weirdhope core book has a lot of me in it (the captured kaiju in the starter adventure has my heart, for eg). Hopefully this is enough. Am truly sorry, all.

With all that out of the way, we’re so excited to get this work into your hands. It’s been all-consuming over the last year, but we hope that you can see where all that effort has gone.

Thanks again for all your support,

David, Dan and Zedeck

Pull the anchor!

It’s Dan here.

I thought I’d write a quick update to apologise for my silence, both here and on my socials, so far.

The truth is I’ve been so quiet because I’ve been incredibly busy working away on the art for this project.

David has set me a huge number of creative challenges with this book — ones that have occasionally pushed me outside my comfort zone, but have also been enormous fun to work through.

Since mid-spring it’s been all Island of Weirdhope in my studio, and I’ve had a blast exploring the water world of Eco Mofos, as I’ve brought it to life in images for you all.

This has been a dream job — my inner 12-year-old is happy as a pig in s*#t watching the mecha and kaiju pour from my pen onto the previously unsullied pages of my sketchbook.

The core book is basically in the bag now, with the adventure and other bits not far behind. David and I are both certain it’s a massive step up from our last one, in terms of design, writing, and overall quality.

I can’t wait for you to see it in all its glory — and I can’t wait to get these ink-stained hands on a hard copy myself.

Here’s a selection of finished artwork and final spreads. Some of it you’ll have seen in rough form already —
I hope you enjoy seeing it in its final, technicolour madness.

Almost there!

Hi there,

First of all, apologies for the delay in this update. Each time we reached a new milestone, I kept thinking "why don't we just nail this bit before showing everyone".

Anyway, here we are. The art is almost finished, and Zedeck's edits are well underway. We're really happy with how it's coming together, and with the new cover. We hope you like it too. We wanted to capture adventure, weirdness and joy, and I think Dan absolutely did that here. Don't worry, you can still see the previous cover as a major spread in the book.

With Zedeck's help, everything is being refined, and I think you'll agree the art that Dan has been pumping out is pretty special. Playtesting has helped hone down some of the procedures, and we now have 36 Schemes, written with the ECO MOFOS!! aficionado and font of ideas, Caelin Araven.

The main book is so nearly there. We're still aiming to get the finished pdf to all backers by the end of the month. As soon as that's locked down, we're concentrating on Four Fathoms Deep, which is also well underway. I've laid out most of it, and there's so much in there. Everyone has produced such incredible writing for it, I'm actually blown away with how they've run with ideas from the core book and taken them to places I would never have imagined. They're beautifully varied, but each is full of flavour and life. The two books together feel like such a vibrant weirdhope world, of future lives and communities.

We can't wait to get the final book to you, it's so close now.

Until the next one (which will be much sooner!),

David and Dan

Process, progress, prowess!

Hi there,

We hope that 2026 has gotten off to a good start for you.

Better at least than it did for poor old Dan. Have you got your violin out? We hope so, because this is a tale of woe. 10 minutes before the spirits of '25 where ushered out, Dan, in his joyful revelry, managed to slip and fall down the garden stairs and broke a couple of ribs. This injury was swiftly followed by a bout of the flu and then a chest infection. January was not a happy month in the Dan household. Because of these mishaps our drawing gnome has only now found his way back to his drawing board, his happy place.

Perhaps it was a product of his fever, or the inevitable lunacy that's long been expected for him, or the fact that he spent much of the festive period drooling over the painted pages of Akira, but Dan has decided to paint the double-page spreads in this new book. As a result, see here the development, from sketch to pencils, to the application of the first colour washes, for the first double-page spread of Islands of Weirdhope!

Here is the original pencil sketch. This drawing was made during the campaign, in Dan's A4 sketchbook.

Dan developed the original sketch into this pencil drawing. Dan uses a mix of blue and graphite pencil, it's a strange way to work and definitely not the most efficient, but the habit is set in and it's how he unknots mistakes or coaxes the lines into order.

And here is the start of the application of the colour. Dan's working with spirit pens, watercolour and inks. There still a long way to go before this image is finished but we'll be sure to share more progress and behind the scenes as we go.

Along with Dan's feverish drawing, the writing has continued apace, and we're hoping to get a new updated pdf to you all within the next few weeks. Talking of writing, David's blog, where he talks about his game and setting ideas, has been nominated for a Bloggie! This is high praise indeed, and if you'd like to vote for it please do, by following this link, being sure to select "Don't Write Lore, Write Tables" if you're feeling kind.

Wishing you all well, across skies and over seas,

Dan & David
